Where do we start on this absolutely SPEEDMASTER grail. In July 1975 the so called Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) was the first international space mission between the United States and the Soviet Union right in the middle of the cold war.
The American Apollo capsule docked successful onto its Soviet Union equivalent, the Soyuz. A true milestone in history, right in the middle of the cold war. Reason enough for OMEGA, respectively their italian distributor De Marchi to create, the second ever, limited edition of a SPEEDMASTER.
Only 500 pieces of this modell have been produced, running under the reference 145.022 with the caliber 861 ticking inside.
The dial bears the mission emblem at the 12 o’clock position and does not feature the SPEEDMASTER PROFESSIONAL writing together with longer tritium indices. The minute hand is a bit longer and the chronograph pushers are half a milimeter larger as on the stanard model. Also the bracelet with reference 1168 and 633 endlinks has a different look as on the base model, almost like an OYSTER bracelet from Rolex.
The caseback is, of course, special as well. Rather than the usual “Flight Qualified” engraving, the APOLLO SOYUZ has a bas-relief of a Saturn Rocket with an engraving that shows Gemini * Apollo * Soyuz (in Russian) and a very light engraving of the individual number, an OMEGA logo and an “I" propably as a reference to the initiating italian dealer De Marchi.
For us a very exciting special edition even more with the original acrylic glass case in a nearly NOS condition.
